  15. <p>     DIED. JOE PASS, 65, jazz guitarist; of liver cancer; in Los
  16. Angeles. Joseph Anthony Jacobi Passalaqua was nine when his
  17. working-class father presented him with a $17 guitar. By his
  18. mid-teens, Pass was already playing with band leaders such as
  19. Charlie Barnet. But the '50s saw Pass stalled by drugs and jail
  20. time, only to re-emerge in the early '60s on an album featuring
  21. jazz musicians enrolled in the Synanon drug-rehabilitation program.
  22. Pass's concert and recording career finally blossomed in the
  23. '70s as his fluid fingering, warm tone and improvisatory skills
  24. drew him to the high-wire act of his profession--unaccompanied
  25. solo guitar.
