- <p> DIED. JOE PASS, 65, jazz guitarist; of liver cancer; in Los
- Angeles. Joseph Anthony Jacobi Passalaqua was nine when his
- working-class father presented him with a $17 guitar. By his
- mid-teens, Pass was already playing with band leaders such as
- Charlie Barnet. But the '50s saw Pass stalled by drugs and jail
- time, only to re-emerge in the early '60s on an album featuring
- jazz musicians enrolled in the Synanon drug-rehabilitation program.
- Pass's concert and recording career finally blossomed in the
- '70s as his fluid fingering, warm tone and improvisatory skills
- drew him to the high-wire act of his profession--unaccompanied
- solo guitar.
